05 September 2018 | Manfred Weber announced his candidacy for becoming the EPP’s lead candidate for the 2019 European elections and the next President of the European Commission.
At today’s meeting of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Chairman Manfred Weber announced his candidacy for becoming the EPP’s lead candidate for the 2019 European elections and the next President of the European Commission. “I believe I can help to kick start a new beginning and a new chapter for Europe. This is urgently necessary because we cannot go on the way it currently is.”, Weber said.
Weber sees Europe at a turning point. The EU is challenged from the outside and attacked from the inside by radicals, nationalists and anti-Europeans: “Today it is all about the self-assertion of Europe and the defence of our values – it is about the survival of our European way of life!” It would therefore be necessary to bring Europe back to the people, by strengthening democracy in Europe and within the EU institutions. “We will open the black box Brussels.”
“People expect us to lead the way towards a better Europe.” Weber insisted that we couldn’t allow Europe to get split between East and West, rich and poor, small and large countries – Europe must stick together. He therefore wants to build bridges and bring together the interests of the people in the member states. “I see myself as a European politician, I am committed to Europe and to all citizens of Europe.”
Yesterday, the Presidency of CSU has already nominated Weber as their lead candidate. The EPP’s lead candidate for the European elections will be elected at the EPP Party Congress on 8th of November in Helsinki.
