15 January 2020 | Towards a more democratic Europe: The Conference on the Future of Europe
How much does my voice in Europe count? This is a question for which we have to provide an answer to the European people with the Conference on the Future of Europe! We have to ensure that Europe continues to play an important role in the 21st century and is prepared for the future. To achieve this, we have to act today:
201 million people went to the polls in the last European elections. The message we draw from this is that Europeans count on Europe, they want to have a say and also decide on their future. We have to take this up and bring Europe closer to the people. Their representation through the European Parliament is the compass for democratic change in the EU. Only a strong European Parliament can ensure that the European citizens have the last say. We need to cement the lead candidate process, establish a right of legislative initiative and promote truly European parties. This is the only way that the EU can become a parliamentary democracy which is capable of representing its citizens adequately!
The Conference on the Future of Europe needs to lay the foundations for a strong, secure, and democratic EU. A Europe that preserves our European Way of Life with a well-functioning rule of law mechanism. A Europe that protects our citizens with a European army and a Europe that speaks united with one voice in the world and decides by majority vote!
