Vice-President of the CSU
Europe needs convinced Europeans. As Vice-President of the CSU, I visit Bavaria regularly where I speak with students, entrepreneurs and worker unions in order to promote Europe. The accomplishments of European unification are now taken for granted. Forgotten are barriers and cumbersome border controls. Forgotten are time-consuming money exchanges. Forgotten is the privilege of being able to work, study and live across Europe.
In the media, we often find Europe shortened to four letters, namely the Euro. A daily look at the newspaper often paints the picture of a Europe in crisis - a Europe of summits and rescue packages. This is a mistake.
The focus must be on the entire European project. In 2012, the European Union, a unique peace project, received the Nobel Peace Prize. To continue the European success story, Europe must be viewed as an opportunity from which all citizens can avail. We need a united Europe to be a global player in today’s globalised world. For this reason, I fight for an accurate and fair interpretation of Europe.
